Types of Orthodontic Appliances

Removable Retainers

Once your braces are no longer attached to your teeth, or you are no longer wearing clear aligners, you will need a device that helps to keep your pearly whites firmly in place. This is where a removable retainer comes in. Because teeth can shift back into their original position, we will provide a retainer that you will wear all the time at first. After some time, you will likely transition to wearing it only at night, helping to keep your new smile in its new location.
Fixed Retainers

Fixed Retainers

Not all patients need a fixed retainer; however, certain situations can make it easier to have one that is permanently affixed to teeth. Whether it is a large gap between teeth that needs to remain closed, or you had rotated or crowded teeth before treatment, these can help you to worry less. Instead of trying to remember to wear your retainer, it’s already in place and working to ensure the longevity and future of your smile.

Palatal Expander

When a jaw is not as wide as it needs to be for orthodontic treatment, a palate expander will be recommended. This metal device is attached to back teeth (molars) and cemented in place. Over time, your jaw will grow wider with the help of a small key that must be used to turn the latch that controls the expansion of the device. In using this type of appliance, you can expect a reduced risk of overcrowding, greater airflow if you struggle to breathe freely at night, and a more properly aligned bite.

Thumb Crib

Thumb Crib

Children who struggle to overcome non-nutritive habits like thumb-sucking may be recommended a thumb crib. This unique device cannot be seen by others. It is equipped with small wires that protrude, resulting in an unpleasant feeling each time a child attempts to suck their thumb. Because the continued practice of this non-nutritive habit can lead to an improper bite, a thumb crib is best used to combat this issue early on.
